A good trusted contact is not simply the person you are closest to. Choose someone who has agreed to the role, is reasonably reachable at the relevant times, understands your routine, and can follow the response plan without overreacting.
Ask for explicit permission
Explain that their number will be stored for check-in alerts and that they may receive an SMS if you fail to confirm. Consent should be informed and easy to withdraw.
Consider availability and distance
A close relative in another country may be emotionally important but unable to check your home quickly. You can combine different roles: one person to coordinate and another nearby person who can provide local help.
Choose calm responders
A trusted contact should understand that an automated alert is not proof of an emergency. Someone who can call, message, gather context, and make proportionate decisions is often a better fit.
Test the arrangement
Run a controlled test so contacts recognize the sender, wording, and timing. Then confirm that the phone numbers are stored in the correct international format and still current.
